Our resident trade expert, Alan Tonelson, author of ‘Race to the Bottom’ and founder of the blog site RealityChek, says the answer is ‘yes’. He better be right because we are in one. He has felt for years that many of the tools of the trade–tariffs, quotas, currency manipulation, subsidies, environmental standards, wages–have been weighted against the U.S. by friends and foes. And while he is glad the battle has been joined, he does have some concerns about America’s willingness to endure the pain it may bring in the short term.
